Beneath Þeistareykir in the Northern Volcanic Zone lies a powerful geothermal field that drives a 90 MW geothermal power station (commissioned 2017). Crystals in the Borgarhraun lava have become a natural laboratory: they show that the magma rose from the Earth's mantle, from more than 20 km depth, in only days to months (Mutch et al., 2019).
